Just recently, UAW union president Ron Gettelfinger angrily lashed out at the National Right to Work Foundation during a nationally televised press conference on the automotive crisis.

He is steaming mad the union bosses have not been able to get their hands on our contributor list, and he hinted that he will ask now his political cronies to help him.

It's absolutely critical you read the briefing below right away.

Dear Robert:

You and I face a crisis.

Union lawyers have served National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation attorneys with papers indicating they will seek a court order to obtain the names and addresses of our financial supporters -- with the ultimate goal to shut us down.

I expect a federal court subpoena to land on my desk at any time.

There's no time to spare. I need your help immediately.

You see, the union bosses are on the attack right now, having elected a union partisan as President and strong forced unionism majorities in Congress...

...and now they want blood from anyone who opposed them -- and in their minds we are Public Enemy #1.

So the union bosses are turning their sights on their longtime nemesis, the National Right to Work Foundation.

They're enraged by the progress we've made in defending rank-and-file workers from forced unionism abuses. When they move to grab more coercive power or trample on more workers, your Foundation's legal team stands in the breach.

They want the Foundation wiped out -- or at least pinned to the mat by crushing and costly defensive battles -- so that they have a clear path to ram through their agenda unopposed.

That's why the union bosses are dusting off a tactic that Big Labor used for 13 years to try to put us out of business.

From 1973 to 1986, twelve international unions and the giant AFL-CIO tried to force us to hand over the Foundation's supporter list so they could harass and try to drive away those who made our vital program possible.

In fact, Reed Larson, who was then the Foundation's president, was almost thrown in jail twice by a federal judge for violating court orders to breach the confidentiality of Foundation supporters. And I promise you this -- I am ready to do the same.

But that suit cost the Foundation hundreds of thousands of dollars to defend. And now, the union bosses have indicated they intend to demand the same thing again from another federal judge.

Let me explain.

A group of non-union orchestra musicians who have been continuously bullied by an AFL-CIO affiliate in the entertainment business recently approached the Foundation for legal aid.

In a nutshell, the union bosses in Hollywood have been on the warpath to destroy the careers of any musician who doesn't join the union and pay full union dues. Incredibly, they've even threatened arrests.

So Foundation attorneys filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Southern California seeking injunctions against -- and monetary damages from -- the union. The union lawyers' response just arrived.

They claim the musicians' lawsuit is illegal, alleging that "interested employers have financed this litigation by providing support or financing to the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation..."

It's only a matter of time before I will be served with a union discovery subpoena demanding our contributor list in an attempt to prove this claim.

This is a bombshell. If the union bosses somehow prevail on this claim, it could shut down our entire legal aid program -- or at least divert Foundation attorneys into costly defensive legal battles whenever they go to court for union-abused employees.

You know we're going to fight the union bosses' demand for names of contributors with every resource I can muster. We cannot let them succeed with this tactic. But union lawyers have war chests of forced dues to spend. They think they can bleed us dry.

The last time they tried this attack, the union lawyers finally admitted they wanted to send the contributor list to local union chiefs all over the country. They wanted to make "discreet inquiries" about the contributors in their areas. You know what that means.

The Foundation's support comes from all kinds of people -- union members, small business folks, and others. Many of them would be subjected to vicious retaliation if the union bosses could just get their names.

Blacklisting, beatings, bombings, and arson are just a few of the tactics union "enforcers" use against anyone who steps out of line.

So you can see why I'm never going to give an inch in protecting the privacy of our supporters.

But the costs of this fight can be enormous -- and consume all our resources while thousands of employees are left to the mercy of union brass.

That's why I'm establishing a Union Attack Emergency Fund to defend ourselves against union boss attacks on the Foundation and its supporters -- and to keep our entire program going strong.

Frankly, as serious as this already is, I believe this is only the first salvo in a coordinated, multi-pronged war on the Foundation to be waged by Big Labor and the new Obama administration.

In fact, I expect that the union-boss-controlled U.S. Department of Labor will soon bear down on your Foundation, misusing tools in the Landrum-Griffin Act.

And, while we have always been extremely careful about following all tax rules, I fear the Obama IRS may turn our organization upside down with an intrusive audit intended to revoke our advantageous tax status in the future.

We must brace ourselves for an onslaught of attacks.

But, if we don't have the funds to defend ourselves and our critical program against the union bosses' outrageous attack on our constitutional rights, we will be able neither to stop their forced unionism power grabs nor defend the rights of the thousands of employees who depend on the Foundation for help.

That's why I need your help to establish this Union Attack Emergency Fund now. If everyone helps out, we will reach my initial goal of $400,000.

HELP!...

Every problem we face today has evolved from We The People who have forgotten our teachings regarding history, of those who fought so determined, and absolute, for the freedoms, and liberties, that we so easily take for granted everyday.

What do we know about those who fought so hard to change those ways,and what we teach our children?What about the ones who have spent a lifetime really screwing up those valued principles? I'm not just talking about the changes in the last fifty years or so.I'm talking about, just how far back do these roots grow? I've always understood it, if you want to fix something, that you need to get to the root of the problem.

Lets not confuse this people, I mean every *single* problem here now, on this big o platter of life we're living today, stems from our neglect to DO WHAT WAS RIGHT FOR THE BETTERMENT of this country, and its people. Think about what I'm saying.! Had everyone, or at least one person of every family, taught, or just reminded others in their immediate families of the importance to pass it on;

Obama throwing black supporters under the bus

I have a suggestion for Gov. David Paterson of New York, recently asked by an associate of Barack Obama to not run for election (not reelection, as he became Governor when Eliot Spitzer resigned) for the office of New York Governor. I have to admire Gov. Paterson's courage to stand up for himself, even though I don't agree with his politics, nor do I commend his record as Governor of New York.

William Katz at Urgent Agenda has said:

"What's a president to do? Now, it's true, Obama has a history of throwing friends under the bus and embracing enemies, so maybe this doesn't upset him all that much. But the other friends have gone under the bus willingly. Paterson is pulling a Rosa Parks."

I would suggest that Gov. Paterson take this verbal comparison to the next step by making a trip to the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, and having a press conference alongside one of the Museum's most famous exhibits, the Rosa Parks Bus. Yes, he could stand beside the actual Montgomery, Alabama, bus on which the late Ms. Parks refused to give up her seat to a (more politically powerful) white person in December 1955, leading to her removal and arrest - and sparking of the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

Pres. Obama has no more moral authority to tell David Patterson not to run than the white bus driver had in telling Rosa Parks to give up her seat. In so doing, Obama shows that he is head not of the Democratic Party or its Black Caucus, but head of the Obama Party and its Obama Family Caucus. He is a politician and not a statesman and has set a precedent for other Democrats, some of them closet racists, to go to black elected officials and tell them to step down in tough election races "for the good of the Party." The other officials can now say, "Well, Pres. Obama said it to Gov. Patterson (who may well lose his bid for the governorship), so it is acceptable behavior."

When the Jamaican bobsled team went to the Winter Olympics in 1988, they knew they had less of a chance of winning a medal than Gov. Patterson has of being elected Governor of New York. But they didn't quit and go home. Wikipedia notes that:

"There, the Jamaican four sled stunned many of their critics by finishing in 14th place, ahead of the United States, Russia, France and Italy.[5]

In 2000 the Jamaicans won the Gold medal at the World Push Bobsled Championships."

What Barack Obama doesn't understand is how one advances in truly competitive situations in the real world. You have to be willing to fall flat on your face a few times -- in public -- before you learn from your experiences.

In life, it's not how many times you fall down, it's how many times you get up.

Barack Obama, pre-selected for office in Chicago's political system, reminds me of the 1919 Black Socks team. For most of his short career, he never experienced what it takes to struggle for something in the real world without the fix being in. Running against Hillary Clinton and the charismatically challenged John McCain were real competitions, granted, but they came rather late in his political career. They were not part of his formative experience, as can be seen in what has happened since his election as president. He has poorly managed domestic (an unformed health care plan that frightens seniors) and foreign (the UN speech) policies, and race relations (Prof. Gates in Cambridge) like a man "who was born on third base (at Wrigley or US Cellular Field) and thought he hit a triple."

Gov. Patterson has worked his way up through the political system to earn election as a State Senator and then the Lt. Governor, being in a position to benefit from former Gov. Spitzer's problems. I never heard of him voting present on a majority of bills from the time he entered the New York State Senate in 1985 until the time he became Senate Minority Leader in 2003. He did this while overcoming a childhood optic nerve condition that left him legally blind. I'm glad he has decided to not step down because some politician who derides Special Olympics athletes on national television thinks it is good for that politician for Patterson to quit.

Even if Gov. Patterson loses his bid for election, he will go out a winner. That is something that Pres. Obama can't abide in other people -- and an attitude that other people can't abide in Pres. Obama.

DOWN THE LAZY RIVER...

I took my doctor[ of fifteen years] fishing on the the Big Horn River here in Montana a couple of weeks ago . While adrift on one of America's top Blue Ribbon Trout rivers, we had this conversation. I asked my Doc..." how long have we known each other now?" He said... "I guess going on fifteen years there about".... then I said "That's about right." So then I said... "Doc, would you consider us to be pretty good friends?... He said..." sure." Then I went on to ask him things, important things, like..." what constitutes solidarity between friends like us, and others as far as that goes?" He answered with this...." I find that my doctor, and my very good friend in the same, to be an open, and honest friend that I would take a bullet for if needed. Without any question, I proclaim him to be this kind of friend to me. You see, I tell him everything, that of a patient, or as a friend would divulge depending on the case at the time.

Later on during our excursion, my friend asked me if there was something bothering me. I slowly answer..." Yeah, there are quite a few things bothersome these days, and one in particular is the Health Care Issue, coming down from D.C." From there, I asked the questions bothering me the most, and in particular, regarding the ones talked about while visiting my doctor, and friend, at his office during an examination. Especially the information written down in my records. He inquired more, so I obliged him with my concerns, and cut to the chase. I told my friend,and doctor, that I was very concerned about my records being turned over to the Feds for any reason. I also asked if the things discussed in his office were as confidential as the things discussed on the river. He replied... "most certainly" I said "thank you, and I truly respect that."

I went on to explain to him that I knew all his answers to all my very worrisome questions towards him, but, that I needed to ask them just the same. You see, I was having a hard time getting to my point, and I didn't quite know how. He's my friend, and how do you say to your friend that you might have to sue him if he violates our Doctor-Patient Confidentiality agreement?

I went on with agreement that I know nothing about the law, and he knows me well enough to acknowledge the same regarding his own awkward position on this , as he put it like this... "what are you worried about...and, are we not friends...do we not share things that we wouldn't share with others, including our wives?" My answer was a definite "yes"... and went on to tell him that I would have to sue him , and the clinic he works for, if they turn over my records to the Federal Government. He said "Great! It's about time someone took the bull by the horn, and stood up for their Constitutional Rights regarding this Heath Care BULLSHIT!

I felt like the world had been lifted from my shoulders. To make a longer story shorter, we went on to have a great day on the river, and caught, and released about fifty beautiful Rainbow and Brown Trout that great day on the river, with a friend that I'm proud to call Doc.

THE CLERK: My Lords, have you reached a verdict in respect of each accused on the second alternative charge as now amended?

LORD SUTHERLAND: We have.

THE CLERK: Would you give me, please, your verdict in respect of the first named accused Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi.

LORD SUTHERLAND: Guilty.

THE CLERK: My Lord, is that verdict unanimous or by a majority.

LORD SUTHERLAND: Unanimous.

THE CLERK: Would you give me please your verdict in the name of the second named accused, Al Amin Khalifa Fhimah.

LORD SUTHERLAND: Unanimous.

THE CLERK: Is that, My Lords, unanimous or by a majority.

LORD SUTHERLAND: Unanimous.

THE CLERK: I will now record the verdict, My Lords.

LORD SUTHERLAND: Al Amin Khalifa Fhimah, in view of the verdict of the court, you are now discharged and are free to go.

MR. KEEN: My Lords, in light of the verdict of the court, I would move on behalf of myself, my junior counsel for leave to withdraw.

LORD SUTHERLAND: Certainly, Mr. Keen. Lord Advocate.

THE LORD ADVOCATE: My Lords, I move for sentence. Megrahi is 49 years of age, his date of birth being the 1st of April 1952. So far as is known to the Crown, he is married and has children. A petition warrant was granted for his arrest on the 13th of November 1991. He was delivered to the Netherlands on the 5th of April 1999, when he was arrested on a provisional extradition warrant issued by the Dutch authorities. And having waived his rights to contest extradition, he was arrested by Scottish police officers the same day. He was committed for further examination in custody on the 6th of April 1999. He was fully committed on the 14th of April 1999, and has been in custody since that date.

My Lords, in accordance with normal practice, as he is a non-British citizen he has been served with a notice under Section 62 of the Immigration Act 1971 and it is open to Your Lordships to recommend in terms of Section 3.6 of that Act that he be deported if and when he is released in custody in the future.

My Lords, the names of those who died were read to the court on the 5th of May 2000. In any ordinary case Your Lordships would have heard something of the circumstances of the deceased and the family left behind. In this case it is not possible to do that, and I don't intend to try. I need hardly say to the court that each one left relatives, wives, husbands, parents and children. Something of the scale of the impact can be gleaned from the fact that more than 400 parents lost a son or a daughter, 46 parents lost their only child. 65 women were widowed and 11 men lost their wives. More than 140 lost a parent and 7 children lost both parents. My Lords, they together with the other friends and relatives left behind are also victims of the Lockerbie bombing.

MR. TAYLOR: There are two matters that I should draw to Your Lordships attention. The first is in relation to my client. He maintains his innocence, and therefore there is nothing I can say by way of mitigation. The second is, in relation to the point at which Your Lordships will require to determine the sentence has to run from, and the submission I make to the court is that it should be from the 5th of April 1999. Your Lordships are entitled to make recommendations on how long, given the mandatory nature of the life sentence is concerned, how long the individual should remain in prison prior to release being considered, and I have taken the view that that's a matter within Your Lordships discretion, having heard all of the evidence in the case, and I have no submissions to make on it.

LORD SUTHERLAND: Thank you, Mr. Taylor. We shall take time to consider the matter of a recommendation. The court will adjourn until 2:00, when sentence will be pronounced.

LORD SUTHERLAND: Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi, the mandatory sentence for the crime of murder is imprisonment for life, and that is the sentence we impose. That sentence shall be backdated to the 5th of April 1999. In view of the horrendous nature of this crime, we think it right that we should make a recommendation to the Secretary of State as to the minimum period which you should serve before being considered for release on license, but for the age that you will have attained at the time of your release and the fact that you will be serving this sentence in what is to you a foreign country, the period that we recommend is substantially less than it would otherwise have been. However, we consider that the appropriate recommendation to the Secretary of State is that a period of 20 years should elapse before you are considered for release. You will also be recommended for deportation at the end of the sentence. That is all.
